In a recent meeting, it was announced that there will be no singing of the psalm verses until further notice. By this, the priest said to wait for instructions.
The priest intends to have a consistent quality in psalm singing for all psalmist/lectors. What he had in mind is to eventually form some kind of training that will result in the uniform singing or chanting of psalm verses during the Responsorial Psalm for the lectors' ministry.

After much work done on my additional self-training towards becoming a psalmist, and having performed the psalmist role for five times already during Holy Masses, I'm taking a brief reprieve.

This would be the fourth time that I would be taking the chanting psalmist role at Holy Mass in our parish church. For two months now, and twice a month, I've been singing the response and chanting the verses of the Responsorial Psalms in the masses I serve as Lector 1 and Psalmist.
Thus far, it has been challenging and frustrating yet fulfilling and fun at the same time. This fourth time, and especially this one, proved to be even more challenging.

Discrete Method of Carrying Psalm Lyrics Sheet to the Ambo
In the previous article, I discussed how bringing a psalm sheet to chant at the ambo has its challenges. So, I've devised a way that helps me discretely carry the psalm lyrics sheet. This method allows me to keep the copy in my pants' back pocket without it getting crumpled until I'm ready to bring it out.

Bringing the Psalm Sheet to Chant at the Ambo
In our parish church, bringing loose sheets to the ambo is discouraged for the lectors. Lectors are supposed to proclaim the scriptures and the scriptures are best read from the lectionary. The lectionary is in a more respectable form than the loose sheets like the common Sunday missalette leaflets.

Today's the third time I'm singing and chanting the Responsorial Psalm as a commissioned psalmist. It's still "so good so far". I'm working with a new choir this time and the choir leader, Ryan, is an experienced keyboardist.

After attending the Basic Psalmist Seminar and Workshop, I realized how little I knew of psalm chanting and singing. I must admit I was a bit envious of how good some other psalmists were at that seminar.

The Lectors who are Psalmists at the same time in our Sunday masses are the lectors proclaiming the First Reading. This is so because the first reader continues to proclaim the Responsorial Psalm as well. That's the setup in our parish.

In today's Sunday Holy Mass, I didn't have the usual butterflies in the stomach I had in my first role chanting the psalm. If there was nervousness, it was now subdued. I saw some familiar faces and co-lectors from the audience and I thought that might make me nervous.

Today's the day for my first crack as a chanting psalmist.
Earlier, a co-lector, John told me to seek and pray for blessings from the Holy Spirit so I wouldn't make mistakes during the psalm's chant. I guess I was partially listening to him, as I was concerned with my readiness.
I agree with him, but deep inside, the blessing and guidance I was seeking was the help to make me READY. That's because I felt I wasn't.

Responsorial Psalm First Chant Practice - Part 2

When I got home, I of course transferred the video recording from the camera into the computer. I converted the video file into an mp3 sound file. The camera was just focused on a music stand the whole time it was recording at the choir loft. So there wasn't really a video component to review.
I also wanted to transfer the audio recording from my cellphone to the computer but then remembered I didn't have the necessary cable. It's an old low-tech cellphone, by the way. But I was still able to review the sound recordings since the cellphone, as low-tech as it is, had loudspeakers.

Today is my first time to practice for my psalm chant in tomorrow's Feast Day Holy Mass. After our psalmist basic formation seminar last week, I decided to go ahead and dive-in into an actual practice. It wasn't so easy to finally go through this.
My groupmates at the seminar were actually hesitant to perform the psalmist role immediately. I was too, but I also thought that this would be a good opportunity to practice and show the little learning that I gained. I still had a time to practice and learn, anyway.

They were only two from their parish of about 32 lectors and 8 psalmists. Upon learning about their psalmist group, we asked questions and learned so much from both of them. Their 8 psalmists only started late last year and a few of them only early this year.
It was interesting to find out how extraordinarily supportive their choir director is to ensure the psalmists are able to correctly chant the psalms in their Sunday masses.
The two said that, initially, the choir director would meet all of them at the same time a day or two before the Sunday mass. This would allow him to teach the response tune and verse chant to all psalmists in one batch. This would minimize having to repeat the ear training/practice sessions to individual psalmists. This is actually a great idea if the choir director could meet all of the psalmists at that same time.

Psalmist Seminar and Workshop
This would be my first time to attend this basic formation seminar. The actual seminar is called Basic Formation Seminar for Psalmists. There was a similar formation last year but I didn't attend that one. I didn't take that seminar too seriously because: There was too little information about it; The announcement was given on short notice; I didn't have the inclination to become a psalmist.
It may have been a coincidence that I didn't attend because in that batch, nobody was commissioned as psalmist. The diocese was still in a state of drafting the ministry's role, purpose and organization.
